RESUMO

Purpose: This bibliometric analysis aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the characteristics, trends, and level of diagnostic efficacy of studies on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) published in Imaging Science in Dentistry (ISD) from 2011 to 2022. Materials and Methods: Publications related to CBCT identified in the electronic collection of ISD were selected according to eligibility criteria by 2 independent reviewers who collected data on the characteristics of the articles (year, authors, and country). The type and topic of studies were analyzed using VOSviewer v.1.6.18 (Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, Leiden, Netherlands). The research articles were classified according to the hierarchical scale of diagnostic efficacy. Results: Of the 236 articles included, most were from South Korea and Brazil. Bong-Hae Cho and Yun-Hoa Jung were the most prolific authors on the topic of CBCT. The most frequently published types of studies were cross-sectional and laboratory-based. The most popular topics WERE related to the diagnosis of pathologies and/or alterations, as well as anatomical variations. On the diagnostic efficacy scale, most studies were rated level 1 (technical efficacy) or 2 (diagnostic accuracy efficacy). Conclusion: A steady increase was observed in publications related to CBCT, which are of both clinical and academic interest. The trends in these publications were analyzed, revealing that most are cross-sectional studies primarily exploring the capabilities of CBCT in diagnosing pathologies and/or changes in the oral and maxillofacial complex. These studies were typically classified as level 1 or 2 on the diagnostic efficacy scale.

RESUMO

To investigate whether low-level laser therapy (LLLT), at different times of application (immediate and late) in the region of the parotid glands, has a distance effect on the microarchitecture of the trabecular bone in mandible of rats irradiated by volumetric modular arc therapy (VMAT). Thirty adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into placebo control groups (CG, n = 2), only radiotherapy (RG, n = 2), only LPLT (LG, n = 2), and two other groups using LLLT in the immediate time (24 h) (ILG, n = 12) and late (120 h) (LLG, n = 12) to radiotherapy by VMAT in a single dose of 12 Gy. LLLT with AsGaAl laser (660 nm, 100 mW), a spot size of 0.0028 cm2, was applied in three points in the region of the right parotid gland, with energy of 2 J/cm2, 20 s per point, for 10 consecutive days. After euthanasia, the right hemimandibles of each animal were dissected, prepared, and analyzed by computerized microtomography (micro-CT) and histomorphometry. The different groups were analyzed by the Tukey and Bonferroni multiple comparison tests. The micro-CT analysis found statistically significant differences between the groups, especially in the LLG, which had the highest average bone volume compared to the CG (p = 0.001) and ILG (p = 0.002) and a greater number of trabeculae than the CG (p = 0.000) and ILG (p = 0.031). The ILG also had a higher number of trabeculae than the CG (p = 0.005). Trabecula separation (Tb.Sp) was lower in the LLG (p = 0.000) and ILG (p = 0.002) when compared to the CG. In the histomorphometry, there was no statistical difference between the groups in relation to all the analyzed variables. Micro-CT analysis showed that the LLLT, even applied at a distance, both in the immediate and late VMAT times, has an effect on the mandibular bone microarchitecture by increasing the volume and number of trabeculae and decreasing the spaces between them.

This study analyzes the curricular organization of the Dentistry Courses in Mercosur member countries, based on the essential contents'grouping structure, established by the Resolution CNE / CES n. 3 of February 19, 2002. The programs' selection was carried out from existing data of the government agencies of the different countries studied, and in the Universia database. The sample consisted of the curricula of these programs obtained in the websites of their respective institutions, comprising 141 Brazilian programs, 8 Argentinian, 2 Paraguayan, and 2Uruguayan. The hourly loads of the disciplines of the curricular matrices of these courses were added, according to the Article 6 of the "Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais" (DCN -Brazilian National Curricular Guidelines), which is subdivided into Biological and Health Sciences, Human and Social Sciences, and Dental Sciences. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The software used for statistical analysis was SPSS version 22.0. The analysis of the results leads to the conclusion that there is currently a similarity inthe countries' curricular structure. Eventual adjustments should be made to achieve a regional professional profile, to establish in the future a strategy of "training for integration" that allows the free passage of Dentistry graduates in Mercosur Member States (AU).

RESUMO

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the blood cell count when applied to parotid glands of rats irradiated by volumetric modular arc therapy (VMAT). Methods: Thirty-two adult male Wistar rats were used in this study. Samples were randomly assigned to three groups: control group (CG, n = 8), immediate laser group (24 hours) (ILG, n=12), and late laser group (120 hours) (LLG, n=12). The two laser groups were previously subjected to VMAT radiotherapy in a single dose of 12 Gy. LLLT with an AsGaAl laser (660 nm, 100 mW) was applied at three points in the region of the parotid glands, right side, with the energy of 2 J per point (20s, 70 J/cm2) and a spot size of 0.0028 cm2 for 10 consecutive days. In the euthanasia, blood samples were obtained by cardiac puncture. The samples from each group were processed by an automatic method and analyzed for erythrogram, leukogram and platelet count values. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and each LLLT time point was analyzed in relation to the control group, with a significance level less than 0.05. Results: Groups using LLLT had higher red blood cell counts, being higher in the LLG (P = 0.000). The hematimetric indices MCV (P = 0.002) and MCH (P = 0.009) were lower than the control group, especially when compared to the group using LLLT 120h after radiotherapy (LLG). White blood cell counts were lower in the groups with radiotherapy and immediate use of LLLT (ILG) (P = 0.011), mainly at the expense of lymphocytes (P = 0.002). Conclusion: The results suggest a potential systemic effect of LLLT, especially on circulating red blood cell counts, regardless of their time of immediate or late use of radiotherapy.

RESUMO

Introduction: This experimental study investigated the mRNA expression of aquaporins (AQPs) 1 and 5 in the parotid glands of rats irradiated with volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and subjected to low-level laser therapy (LLLT) at different time points. Methods: The sample consisted of 30 Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into the following groups: control, LLLT alone (LG), radiotherapy alone (RG), and experimental groups that received LLLT at 24 hours (early experimental group [EEG], n=12) and 120 hours (late experimental group [LEG], n=12) after radiotherapy. VMAT was delivered at a single dose (12 Gy) and LLLT was performed with an aluminium-gallium-arsenide diode laser (660 nm, 100 mW), spot area of 0.0028 cm2, energy of 2 J/cm2 applied to 3 spots in the region corresponding to the right parotid gland, for 10 consecutive days. The right parotid gland was resected and prepared for RNA extraction. The gene expression of AQPs was evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) using specific TaqMan probes, with the HPRT gene as an internal control. Results: The lowest AQP1 gene expression was 0.83 (0.27) with the use of LLLT 24 hours after radiotherapy (EEG), and the highest was 1.56 (0.80) with the use of LLLT alone (LG). Likewise, the lowest AQP5 gene expression was found in the EEG (mean = 0.88; SD = 0.49) and the highest in the LG (mean = 1.29; SD = 0.33). Conclusion: The use of LLLT after radiotherapy may contribute to the maintenance and an increase of these proteins, even when used at a later time point after radiotherapy.

RESUMO

Panoramic radiographs are important for the evaluation and classification of the third molars position, allowing the diagnosis and planning of extraction. The objective of this study is to evaluate upper and lower third molars positions in panoramic radiographs with the classification methods proposed by Pell and Gregory (1933) and Winter (1926) and the subsequent comparison of results with other authors. Panoramic radiographs of 310 patients were analyzed, 197 female and 113 male, totaling 1,211 third molars. In relation to the upper third molars, the most prevalent positions were: angle compared to the long axis of the second molar of Distoangular form (53.23 %) and the depth of impaction as Class C (48.25 %). In the lower third molars, the most prevalent positions were: angle to the long axis of the second molar in Mesioangular classification (52.96 %), the depth of impaction was B (46.54 %) and the tooth relationship with the mandibular ramus was identified as class I (55.26 %). These results provide information that can be utilized in predicting third molar development in terms of impaction or eruption, assisting dental surgeons in making decisions regarding surgical planning and treatment.

Removal of impacted teeth may pose major challenges to the dental surgeon and requires careful surgical planning. The present series describes three clinical cases subjected to surgical extraction of atypically positioned impacted teeth with successful outcomes and no complications. The approach adopted in each case is discussed (AU).

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of dental caries experience and the components of the decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among adolescents in southern Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 509 adolescents aged 11-14 years enrolled at public schools in the municipality of Osório (southern Brazil). A calibrated examiner performed the clinical examination for caries (World Health Organization: DMFT index), malocclusion (Dental Aesthetic Index) and traumatic dental injuries [Andreasen et al., 2007]. The participants answered the Brazilian version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14) - Impact Short Form, and their parents/guardians answered a structured questionnaire addressing demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Data analysis involved Poisson regression with robust variance, with the calculation of rate ratios adjusted for potential confounding variables. High severity of dental caries experience exerted a significant impact on OHRQoL, even after controlling for socioeconomic and clinical factors (rate ratio 1.30; 95% confidence interval, CI 1.12-1.51). All OHRQoL domains were affected by untreated dental caries. The multivariate analysis demonstrated that the CPQ11-14 scores were 33% higher among adolescents with untreated caries (rate ratio 1.33; 95% CI 1.17-1.50) and 24% higher among those with missing teeth (rate ratio 1.24; 95% CI 1.06-1.47). No difference in OHRQoL was found between adolescents with filled teeth and those without dental caries. In conclusion, dental caries experience, untreated dental caries and missing teeth exerted a negative impact on OHRQoL among the adolescents.

RESUMO

Objective: To identify and analyze cases of OMF treated in an emergency hospital in southern Brazil. Material and Methods: The investigators conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional study. The sample was composed of 1,533 patient medical records. Demographic, seasonal, and clinical variables were collected. Additionally, the medical records also included data on etiological factors, injury site, and tissues involved. A descriptive analysis was conducted based on 1,179 (76.9%) records of OMF injuries. Results: Most patients were male children and adolescents. Accidents (59.7%), such as falls, and interpersonal violence (18.7%), such as physical aggression, were the main etiological factors. Most injuries involved soft tissue (66.4%), especially in the lip region; whereas fractures affected the nasal bones. Transfers and hospitalizations accounted for 8.1% of clinical outcomes and dentists participated in the treatment of 85% of cases. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest a higher prevalence of OMF injuries in men, affecting young people more frequently and showing falls as the main etiological factor. Dentists participated in the majority of the medical care. Future studies will focus on determining risk groups, developing preventive programs, and improving health care services, with the participation of dentists in the multidisciplinary team.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Typically, dental implants are placed in irradiated bone after a delay that exceeds 6 months, but it is not known whether longer delays are beneficial. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to review the literature comparing the failure rate of dental implants placed in irradiated bone between 6 and 12 months and after 12 months from the cessation of radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four electronic databases were searched for articles published until February 2013 without language restriction: Lilacs, Medline, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Two reviewers independently assessed the eligibility criteria and extracted data. Fixed effect meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS: Overall, 3,749 observational studies were identified. After the screening of titles and abstracts, 236 publications were selected, and 10 were included in the final analysis. The pooled relative risk (RR) of failure was RRpooled = 1.34 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.79), higher in individuals who had dental implants installed between 6 and 12 months after receiving radiotherapy. I(2) indicated nearly 21% heterogeneity (p = .25). Egger's test indicated no evidence of publication bias (p = .62); however, the removal of one study significantly affected the overall RR (RRpooled = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.77-1.52). CONCLUSIONS: Placing implants in bone within a period shorter than 12 months after radiotherapy may result in a higher risk of failure; however, additional evidence from clinical trials is needed to verify this risk.

RESUMO

The present study measured removal torque and bone-implant interface resistance of machined implants, acid-etched implants, or machined implants irradiated around the implant area with infrared low-level laser therapy (LLLT; 830 nm) immediately after surgery. There were statistically significant differences between Groups A (control) and B (rough surface) (P = .03). Implants with a rough surface seem to add resistance to the bone-implant interface compared with smooth titanium implants or implants treated with LLLT.

RESUMO

Treatment of facial trauma sequelae is a complex and challenging process. There is still controversy over suitable materials for orbital wall reconstruction. This study evaluated calcium phosphate cement (CPC) implants manufactured by rapid prototyping in the repair of orbital wall defects secondary to trauma. Computed tomographic scans of 5 patients were used for surgery planning and production of CPC implants. Implants were used to restore orbital wall anatomy, ocular alignment, and facial contour. Benefits resulting from the use of implants, such as a reduced operating time, patient response to biomaterial implantation, biomaterial integrity and stability, and patient satisfaction with treatment, were analyzed qualitatively. Our results suggest that CPC is an effective and safe material for orbital reconstruction because of its biocompatibility and easy production and placement.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The objective of the study was to determine the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors (OTs) in the world population, directing an epidemiologic profile to these lesions. METHODS: Was conducted a search in epidemiologic studies involving OTs that are listed by PubMed and Ovid, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library, embracing the period from January 1960 to January 2010, to verify their incidence worldwide. We identified 195 articles, of which 19 articles were selected, considering the location, age, sex, histologic type, and World Health Organization classification. RESULTS: A total of 8544 OTs were found. The results showed a low frequency of malignant OTs in selected works. The most frequent tumor was ameloblastoma (39.6%), followed by odontoma (20.1%) and the newly included keratocystic OT (13.8%). CONCLUSIONS: These OTs are uncommon lesions in world population, and malignant OTs are very rare. The relative frequency of different kinds of OTs, the age, and the sex distribution show a marked geographic variation in incidence of those lesions. This was particularly notable in the ameloblastomas and odontoma, with the incidences being relatively well and weighted showing similar values to an average when compared with previous studies.

The use of implants as orthodontic anchorage has became an important alternative when treating adult patients with unfavorable tooth position or partially edentulous area when the conventional anchorage would produce limitations in the treatment. The purpose of this paper is to describe a case report of a adult female, with skeletal Class II, an upper dental midline deviation to the left, with fixed bridge from 23 to 26 and the absence of the 14 and the 15. For the current treatment a mini screw was used as absolute anchorage and a niquel titanium closed coil for distalizing mechanics. The objective of this article is to show the importance of mini screws for anchorage associated with fixed appliances.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ability of a mixture of α-TCP and autogenous bone (AB) vs. α-TCP alone and AB alone to promote new bone formation and tissue repair in bone defects. METHODS: Bone defects surgically created in 15 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Group I (AB), Group II (α-TCP), Group III (α-TCP+AB assessed by light microscopy), and Group IV (α-TCP+AB assessed by scanning electron microscopy). Bone repair findings were assessed at 30, 60, and 120 days postoperatively. RESULTS: The histological findings obtained in Groups I (p=0.459), II (p=0.368), and III (p=0.459) and at 30 days (p=0.717), 60 days (p=0.717), and 120 days (p=0.779) did not show statistically significant differences. Scanning electron microscopy revealed direct contact between the α-TCP+AB implant and the bone tissue at 120 days. CONCLUSION: The α-TCP implant is effective alternative bone substitutes for the treatment of critical size bone defects.

The Brazilian Society for Dental Research (SBPqO) is an annual meeting for the publishing of the dentistry scientific research in Brazil. The aim of this study was to search publications by students and professors of School of Dentistry, Lutheran University of Brazil / ULBRA (Canoas, Cachoeira do Sul, Torres) in the Brazilian Oral Supplements Research, a scientific journal dedicated to publication of SBPqO research banners. Published abstracts were accessed by online searching on site of SBPqO and organized according to: year, code research, authors (surname), banner category and the study design. Data were organized in a table from the first publication and analyzed in relation to the frequency of publications per year and study design. In 2006 there was the highest number of publications (50). However, the publications are decreasing on last three years (2007, 2008 e 2009). The design of most publications at period was in vitro and cross-sectional. These studies have low capacity to generate scientific evidence.

Purpose: To describe a case of congenital epulis with multiple lesions, which was treated combining surgical resection of the largest tumor and monitoring of the smaller lesions. Case description: A white female newborn showed a large (2.4x1.8x1.1cm), pinkish-red, nodular formation on the left side of the maxillary alveolar ridge, which was preventing mouth closure and causing feeding difficulties. Other small polyps were present on the left side of the mandibular ridge. Excisional biopsy under general anesthesia allowed for the complete removal of the irregular, bilobed maxillary tumor. The diagnostic hypothesis of congenital epulis of the newborn was confirmed based on both the anatomic details and immunohistochemical profile of the lesion. The smaller mandibular tumors were not resected; complete spontaneous remission occurred within 6 months. After surgery, the patient showed substantial clinical improvement, with complete functional and esthetic rehabilitation. No recurrence was observed. Conclusion: Treatment allowed the reestablishment of vital functions and normal neonatal development. The surgical approach improved the infant's quality of life and restored the parents' confidence and emotional stability.

Outros pólipos menores estavam presentes no lado esquerdo do rebordo mandibular.
